Sorry, Stardock. My money's going elsewhere!
Published on February 23, 2005 By messybuu In Customization Software

I was a user of Object Desktop by Stardock for the last three years. I never regreted the purchase. With Stardock’s consistent updating of its software, the quality, thhe cool new features they’d always have in betas, it made my PC much more entertaining and useful!

However, this month, I have decided that I will not renew my membership to Object Desktop. In fact, I will not use it ever again!

Think I’m wrong for this? Well, after reading this, you will agree that I should not waste another dollar on Object Desktop!

Firstly, I am no longer on a PC. Having two computers was unnecessary for what I do (nothing), and I could accomplish more if I used only one computer. Besides, my brother needed a new PC, so I gave him that and fully embraced my one true love, my iBook.

Why does this matter? Well, Object Desktop is not compatible with OS X, Apple’s operating system for the Mac. In other words, there is no way I could even use programs such as WindowBlinds and DesktopX on my computer. In fact, OS X doesn’t run programs at all! It runs applications, which are like programs, but with a different name.

Even if it could run programs, I still wouldn’t waste my money on Object Desktop. Like the Monk, I suffer from OCD (and I remember everything). Everything has to be perfect, and the options that Object Desktop would provide me would cause far too much stress on me. I didn’t suffer from customizing Windows, since it’s inherently messy, but OS X is arguably perfect, and so there’s not much I could do to improve it. Anything I changed would be changed back to the default soon after. That’s why I don’t use Konfabulator, CandyBar, or ShapeShifter, even though I purchased all three applications!

So, as you can see, it would not be prudent for me to renew my membership to Object Desktop Network. I’m sure I’ll make some people angry by posting this, and I’m sure some of you will disagree, but none of you can deny that I have made some valid points for not purchasing Object Desktop or any other Stardock program ever again (assuming they don’t ever develop any Mac applications)! However, if you can convince me to change my mind, then I’ll happily renew my membership!

When my OD subscription, I won't be resubscribing either. I am a recent convert to Mac myself. OD is a great product, but why buy something you can't use? There is one Stardock product I will still continue to use, and that is JoeUser.com since it works on any OS with a good web browser.

Hmmm... I have an iMac G5 20" and a Windows XP laptop. When I need to work, I'm on my XP laptop. When I want to play games, I'm on my XP laptop. When I want to look at (admittedly) nice, smooth, incredibly smooth graphics, I'll go sit at the iMac G5

The secret of the Mac is finally revealed....it doesn't run programs and it's only a looker
"Oooh look at all da pretty agua colours. Hello little aqua button. Hello little aqua button. You're so sparkly and smooth. I think I'll take you home so I can sit there for hours and hours and admire you." :.drools.:

....this thread is funny thanks for the laugh this morning messybuu

If OCD is Over Customized Desktop then I'm suffering from it too....
However the apps I run don't port to AMC or MAC (eventually both will suffer the same fate)

This is one of those posts where I can't tell if it's brilliant humor, or self-important drivel. Bravo Messybuu for completely confusing most people here!

Well i for one am sorry to see you leave the community, and would like to wish you all the best..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this forum a part of "win" customize.com? Why would you be posting somthing so blatantly damning of a windows "application" on a windows advocating site if you are such a mac convert. Why not just go create your own site... macustomize.com ... as of THIS posting it is available for sale. I am sure if you can find some company with nothing better to do with their time and money you could enlist their aid in creating this completely worthless endeavor, however, I would suggest not wasting any time on this pontification here, since this is obviously not where you feel you are most welcomed. With that, I am more than happy to encourage you to go post elsewhere.

Enjoy your new macsite and there is no charge for the free research work done on your behalf to expedite your departure.

And as for buying Object Dock, well, if there were somehting more useful, I am sure you would have mentioed it, but since you haven't mentioned a better "application", I am sure in addition to your original rant, you have nothing else original to contribute.

Since you are OCD and seemed to feel a need to write this, I'm just curious, if you were to trade in a Ford for a Dodge would you also notify Ford that you feel you now have absolutely no need to visit any of their parts departments anymore?

Did you tell your mom you had no use for her womb any longer, after birth?

I too am a bit confused by this post. I you don't use Windows anymore, then obviously you can't use Windows software anymore either. Nothing controversial there...
Oh, and BTW: programs, applications, software, are all synonyms that mean the same thing, on all platforms, Mac, Windows, Linux, whatever.

I suffer from OCD too. It HAS to be perfect. I currently only use Luster, Easteria or ThunderStorm WB skins because of this. Going on GT3, Mako and G-Pod. Those will be added to my list. Okay, and Christmas Time is good too, but there's obvious reasons why I'm not using it now...

I'm glad OCD doesnt mean Over customized desktop because I only use WB, DX and CursorXP!
