Should those unable to make rational decisions concerning marriage be allowed to marry?
All this talk about hypothetical marriages (i.e. man and ape, man and child, etc.) has me wondering if marriage as it stands today is ethical. The criticism against the idea of a man and ape/child getting married is simple: the ape/child does not have the mental capacity to make such a decision. However, one might be shocked to learn that it is legal today for individuals to marry those without the mental capacity to make a knowledgeable decision concerning marriage. Although they are adults, society treats them as though they are children, because they suffer from mental disabilities that are often referred to as retardation. It's sad to see many speak out against marriages between an adult and a child, while not one voice is heard demanding that individuals who are mentally impaired be kept from mating and marrying others for their own safetey.
