No Shades of Gray in Abortion

Many people believe abortion is wrong, but should remain legal. Despite seeing it as murder, they don't think it should be banned. This is especially true with Catholics, as many of them want to vote for Kerry, and therefore must rationalize Kerry's support for abortion, which the Catholic Church deems as murder. Sure, there are third-party candidates for whom they could vote with a clear conscience, but they'd prefer to vote for the lesser of two evils than somebody they actually support. That is why they must justify Kerry's support for abortion. However, their reasoning is total bullshit.

Firstly, let's look at abortion itself. To them, it's murder. How the hell can they even support the legalization of murder and not feel like a monster for doing so? Is it because the murderer will resort to methods that might result in her death as well as the death of the child? So, we should legalize murder in cases in which the murderer's life is jeopardized?

Sure, abortions are safer if legalized, but so is child pornography and drunk driving. If child pornography were legalized, child porn stars could form a union to protect their rights and black market kiddy porn wouldn't be in demand as much as it is now, so there'd be less unregulated child porn. As for drunk driving, if drunk driving were legal, driving schools could teach people how to drive drunk to help them drive better when they're drunk. Child porn and drunk driving will happen forever. Might as well facilitate it.

Some also provide comparisons of countries with legalized abortion and countries with it banned, saying that because there are less abortions in countries with it legalized, the legalization of abortion actually decreases the amount of abortions happening. However, it's clear to anybody that there are other factors to take into consideration. I just can't see somebody going: "If abortion were legal, I wouldn't have one, but since it isn't, I must have one!" Besides, if legalizing rape and murder resulted in the decrease in both of them, does that mean that they should be legalized?

My point? Choose a side. Either abortion isn't murder and there's nothing really wrong with it so it should remain legal or abortion is murder and to legalize it would be no better than legalizing the murder of the Jews.
